About Us

SAWL Scholarship Fund was set up in December 1987, with the goal of furthering the educational needs of needy students with physical disabilities and special needs, who have displayed scholastic aptitude.

Having been established under the auspices of SAWL in memory of the late Honourable Justice Tan Ah Tah, the Fund later obtained its Institute of Public Character status in 2009. The name of the Fund was changed to SAWL Scholarship Fund in May 2016.

The Fund has also expanded its objectives to award scholarships and bursaries to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder ("ASD") and/or intellectual disability from secondary schools to tertiary institutions who demonstrate both financial need and academic promise. The students with ASD must:
- be so certified by a relevant medical professional or psychologist; and

- be attending any special education school registered with the Ministry of Education or any early intervention programme(s) registered with SG Enable or the National Council of Social Service.

Since 2018, a total of about 846 applicants have benefited from scholarships disbursed to Secondary Schools, Institute of Technical Education, Junior Colleges and Tertiary institutions. To-date, a sum of over $800,000 has been disbursed. SAWL prides itself on not having any administrative fees except for the compulsory auditor's fees or fund-raising costs, thereby ensuring that almost every dollar that is donated goes straight to the beneficiaries.

Our Programmes

The Fund's fund raising programmes are organised by SAWL. SAWL raises funds for the Fund through the publication and sale of "You & the Law" and "Youth & the Law".

SAWL also collaborates with "The Singapore Shawl" to sell shawls to raise funds for the Fund.
