ArtsEquator is an arts organisation that values and promotes Southeast Asian regional art practice. Through the ArtsEquator Fellowship and other programmes, ArtsEquator is committed to developing arts writing and criticism which identify Southeast Asian creative practices as part of, rather than adjunct to, global contemporary arts.

ArtsEquator was founded by Kathy Rowland and Jenny Daniels in 2016. Artsequator.com started as a Southeast Asian arts and culture platform, dedicated to supporting and promoting arts criticism with a regional perspective in Southeast Asia. Producing weekly articles supported by industry and community programmes, ArtsEquator's efforts contributed to the development of critical thinking in the arts. With the ArtsEquator Fellowship launched in 2023, ArtsEquator has evolved into focusing on grant-giving platforms and programmes to continue our mission to cultivate and grow arts criticism in Southeast Asia.

Working with over 150 content creators since 2016, we have published over 1,700 reviews, essays and interviews about theatre, dance, film, books and visual arts by Southeast Asian art makers. We also were the first to produce arts-focused podcasts in Singapore, and to date, have published over 80 podcasts. Artsequator.com now also serves as an active archive for researchers, writers and students.

ArtsEquator aims to cultivate and grow arts criticism in Southeast Asia amongst our principal stakeholders: arts critics, arts makers and arts audiences.

In 2023, the ArtsEquator Fellowship was launched as a development programme for mid-career arts critics and journalists in Southeast Asia.

As an industry leader in this unique field, ArtsEquator has led arts writing and criticism training programmes to create a new generation of arts critics. Our past projects include the Asian Arts Media Roundtable (2019), the first-ever gathering for arts media in Asia, ArtsEquator's Burning Questions on Zoom, Critics Live! (in collaboration with WILD Rice and SIFA 2019), and international collaborations with ILHAM Gallery, Asia-Europe Foundation and HowlRound.

We have also run several local and regional programmes to support arts writing and criticism. These include one-on-one mentorships, public forums and a Critics Reading Group programme targeted at developing more mature writers.
