Three years ago, Mr Sam Stephen, a retired security guard, suffered a stroke that left him hospitalised for two months. Then 69-years old, Sam who lives alone had to crawl to reach his handphone to call for help. While in the hospital recuperating, he became increasingly worried about his future.

"I looked at myself and wondered, what would become of me. I could hardly walk. How was I going to take care of myself?" thought Sam.

Sam was then referred to TOUCH Home Care (THC) in Ang Mo Kio, where TOUCH's occupational therapists visited his home to assess his needs and suggested ways to make it safer to suit Sam's needs. Sam's physiotherapist, Vivian Lim, planned a 12-week therapy programme for him. THC's housekeeping services were also roped into keep his home clean so that Sam could focus on his therapy programme.

Sam was taught how to walk at home using a walking stick and was put through an "obstacle" course to balance himself and adapt to different circumstances such as tight spaces.

"Sam has responded well to our therapy efforts as he is highly motivated. Keeping him fit will help prevent frailty and enable him to enjoy a better quality of life," said Ms Vivian Lim, Senior Therapist, TOUCH Home Care.

With your generous donation, you can enable elderly like Sam to continue aging gracefully in our community with the support of professtional therapists.
