About Campaign

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a detrimental effect on the Singapore arts community, and crucial measures put in place to combat the spread of the coronavirus has meant that many companies have had to cancel productions and performances---The Necessary Stage included.

Our much anticipated main season of this year, The Year of No Return, was originally scheduled to premiere at the Singapore International Festival of Arts 2020 in May. Unfortunately, this Asian collaboration delving into the crucial issue of climate change has been shelved, along with the rest of the line-up at the festival.

Earlier in February this year, The Necessary Stage's school tour of Merry Time, a skit commissioned by the Singapore Maritime Foundation, saw the axe too, as schools tightened their social distancing measures. Likewise in the same month, our Theatre for Seniors' public showcases of their socially engaged devised theatre pieces were cancelled in view of public health concerns.

Despite these cancellations, we remains committed to paying all the freelancers we have engaged---actors, designers, production personnel. The importance of supporting our fellow arts practitioners cannot be overemphasized during this period, as a measure to prevent a detrimental financial fall-out for freelancers and the industry as a whole.

We urgently appeal for your support during these times. Please donate to keep The Necessary Stage afloat, and to help us support the freelancers in our care.

About the Charity

Formed in 1987 by our current Artistic Director Alvin Tan, The Necessary Stage (TNS) is a non-profit theatre company with charity status. Our mission is to create challenging, indigenous and innovative theatre that touches the heart and mind. TNS is a recipient of the National Arts Council's Major Grant FY2017-FY2019, and is also the organiser of the annual M1 Singapore Fringe Festival. TNS also has the honour of being the only arts company in Singapore helmed by two Cultural Medallion recipients: Artistic Director Alvin Tan and Resident Playwright Haresh Sharma.

2020 sees TNS celebrating its 33rd anniversary. Having presented more than 100 original plays in Singapore and abroad, TNS remains focused on breaking new ground in original local content and intercultural exploration.
