About Campaign

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a detrimental effect on the Singapore arts community. While recent announcements relaxing safe management measures are welcomed, they largely benefit bigger theatres. Small theatres like The Necessary Stage (TNS) which play to intimate audiences continue to be restricted in terms of outreach, and subsequently ticketing income.

Despite the odds, in January 2021, the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (organised and curated by TNS) went ahead, staging local commissioned theatre to small capacities of between 21 to 35 persons in the theatre space for each performance. Just recently in March/April 2021, TNS staged our main season production, Model Citizens at our black box theatre, but to a tiny house of 16 to 18 patrons per show. While these performances also had videos on demand (VOD), we recognise that VODs can never replace the magic of experiencing live theatre. Based on the relatively low take-up rate of VODs, we believe our audiences feel the same too.

We want to continue creating challenging, thoughtful and intimate theatre for the Singapore audience. But to do that, we need your help to defray our costs, to make it possible for us to sustain the theatre even with severely reduced capacities.

We urgently appeal for your support during these times. Please donate to keep TNS afloat, and to help us create and present thought-provoking Singapore theatre that reflects our lived experiences, and that give voice to the marginalised in our midst.

About the Charity

Formed in 1987 by our current Artistic Director Alvin Tan, The Necessary Stage (TNS) is a non-profit theatre company with charity status. Our mission is to create challenging, indigenous and innovative theatre that touches the heart and mind. TNS is a recipient of the National Arts Council's Major Grant FY2017-FY2019, and is also the organiser of the annual M1 Singapore Fringe Festival. TNS also has the honour of being the only arts company in Singapore helmed by two Cultural Medallion recipients: Artistic Director Alvin Tan and Resident Playwright Haresh Sharma.

2020 sees TNS celebrating its 33rd anniversary. Having presented more than 100 original plays in Singapore and abroad, TNS remains focused on breaking new ground in original local content and intercultural exploration.
