In Singapore, every baby receives a hearing test at birth, which is known as universal newborn hearing screening. Research has showed that about 0.1% (or 1 of every 1,000) babies born in Singapore have severe or profound hearing loss, and about 0.5% (or 5 of every 1,000) have lesser degrees of hearing loss.

In addition, Singapore is the second fastest ageing nation in Asia after Japan. Persons over 65 years old will increase from 7% of the total resident population in 1999 to 18% in 2030. Age-related hearing loss is becoming very common and about 50% of those 80 years and above is expected to have significant hearing loss.

As of FY20/21, SADeaf has a registrar of over 6,000 clients with varies degree of hearing loss and has been supporting them through a series of support initiatives and programmes ranging from hearing care, financial assistance, job employment, legal services, counselling, training and social integration activities.

With an annual operating expanse projected at S$5million range, we garner this much needed funds through daily appeals and all assistance big and small will come a long way in ensuring our causes continued and those in need are serve with the best available resource.

About the Charity

The Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) is a social service organisation that has been serving the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing community in Singapore for the past six decades.

Established in 1955, SADeaf serves over 6,000 (FY19/20) Deaf and Hard-of-hearing persons. A member of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) and, is also supported by the Community Chest of Singapore, Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF). Internationally, SADeaf is affiliated to the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and locally to the Children Charities Association (CCA).

SADeaf mission is to assist the Deaf and hard-of-hearing persons to achieve a better quality of life and to enable them to integrate and contribute to society.

It costs SADeaf approx. $5.1 million per year to run all its services and programmes and is dependent on the bulk of its funding on the generosity of corporate and the general public.
