About Us

Teater Ekamatra (est. 1988) is an established and exciting Singaporean arts company with charity status that spotlights artists of diverse ethnicities.

Helmed by award-winning director and performer Mohd Fared Jainal, we are living out our vision of being at the heart of theatre, by staging daring works that address socio-political issues.

Teater Ekamatra has been commissioned by notable international arts festivals and has also won numerous accolades, especially at Singapore's highest platform for excellence in theatre, the Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards, where our trophies have included Best Original Script several times.

Guided by our values of diversity, inclusivity, integrity, accountability, and people-centredness, Teater Ekamatra is committed to our mission of creating engaging art that inspires, as well as incubating emerging talents, and expanding diversity within the industry.

We have a dedicated team of associate artists comprising of video designer, E Lee Loong; playwright / director, Irfan Kasban; actress / host Munah Bagharib; Bharathanatyam dancer, Ruby Jayaseelan; and playwright / dramaturg Zulfadli Rashid.

Our Programmes

2020 marks Teater Ekamatra's 32nd year of preserving, celebrating, and fostering ethnic minority theatre through award-winning productions and successful development programmes which benefit both artists and youths. In this time, we have produced over 150 new works, ran more than 30 development programmes for youths and artists, and worked with more than 1000 artists from diverse backgrounds.

As a theatre company, we see it as our mission to bring new perspectives to the narratives that define who we are as Singaporeans, and as citizens of the world. In sharing a different perspective, we also hope to provide an insight into communities whose stories are in the background and not often heard. In 2020, we will explore urgent themes around caregiving, mental health, and identity rooted in our everyday performance of gender, ethnicity, religion, and nationality.

We believe strongly that our work contributes to the diversification of local theatre and promotes intercultural understanding. Your support will enable us to foster and nurture artists and youths of diverse backgrounds to realise their potential, produce works that inspire, and cultivate a more perceptive society through the power of theatre.
