Helping Uncle Yap Age in Place

Uncle Yap, a 91-year-old widower, has multiple medical conditions such as stroke, kidney disease and gout. All these led him to have frequent falls and he was admitted to St. Andrew's Community Hospital (SACH) for rehabilitative care. With therapy, Uncle Yap's balance and leg strength improved. Upon discharge, he was able to walk with a walking stick.

As a long-time resident of Kampong Glam, he loves spending time with his friends in the community. Hence, SACH referred him to St. Andrew's Senior Care (SASC) (JOY Connect), a service of SACH located at Kampong Glam, for continued rehabilitation. SACH Home Care Services also arranged subsidised home medical and nursing services for him.

Uncle Yap is now able to live life to the fullest in Kampong Glam. He is able to live independently and attend therapy sessions regularly at SASC (JOY Connect). With your donation, SACH will be able to provide a spectrum of affordable care services to seniors like Uncle Yap. Together, let us help our seniors age in place in the community.

About the Charity

Out of passion to care for the physical, emotional and social well-being of the community, the St. Andrew's Medical Mission was founded in 1913 by Dr. Charlotte Ferguson-Davie, the wife of the first Anglican Bishop of Singapore who was also a medical doctor herself. Seeing the plight of the local women and children of that time and the lack of medical services for them, Dr. Ferguson-Davie set up a dispensary along Bencoolen Street for the destitute women and children. The Medical Mission continued to meet the locals' needs and thus led to the opening of more dispensaries and eventually, St. Andrew's Mission Hospital in 1923 and St. Andrew's Orthopaedic Hospital in 1939.

Working closely with the Government, SAMH constantly developed its services to meet the relevant needs of our local community at all times. Today, SAMH has under its operation: St. Andrew's Autism Centre, St. Andrew's Community Hospital, St. Andrew's Nursing Home and St. Andrew's Senior Care.
