ends 31 Dec 2023, 11:59 PM As a single mother, Mdm Tan Gek Hong juggled three jobs to support her children, but she did not waver and would then work her way up as a dim-sum chef until her retirement. Even after, her love for food enabled her to continue whipping up sumptuous dishes for her family.
Unfortunately, Mdm Tan was later diagnosed with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and kidney failure, hampering her mobility. Today, she walks with the aid of a walking frame and is mostly confined at home, where she lives with her son with special needs. She often felt lonely and yearned for company.
Mdm Tan's social worker eventually introduced her to the Singapore Red Cross' Community Befriending service, where she has been receiving visits every fortnightly. She enjoys the company of her community befrienders and looks forward to their next visit.
"I appreciate their listening ear and enjoy interacting with them. Their concern and sincerity warm my heart. I feel comfortable and cared for," says Mdm Tan.
As our aging population continues to grow, the need for programs and resources to support our elderly in aging comfortably has become increasingly critical.
Your gift will ensure that the seniors under our care have access to the necessary support and resources to age comfortably and with dignity. Not only will you provide critical support to seniors in need; you are also helping to build a more inclusive and compassionate society for all.
