Founded in 1934, The Singapore Buddhist Lodge (SBL) is one of the Buddhist temples in Singapore. SBL's objective is to propagate Dharma and to perform charitable undertakings. Since its establishment, SBL has been very active in the following areas: organising pujas and Buddhism related events; distribution of red packets to the aged during Lunar New Year; giving out bursaries to students of all races; reaching out to the less fortunate through its Family Service Centre and Chinese Free Clinics and provision of free vegetarian meals to the public everyday.
The Singapore Buddhist Lodge started the distribution of bursary in 1979 to assist hundreds of students, regardless of race or religion, from economically deprived families to continue their academic pursuits. Many recipients of bursaries strived to the best of their abilities to achieve outstanding academic achievements and success.
The Singapore Buddhist Lodge registered the "Singapore Buddhist Lodge Education Foundation" in the year 1996. The foundation has continuously enhanced its charitable services to benefit more people in the society. Over the 38 years of bursary distribution, SBL Education Foundation has distributed more than 18 million dollars to students from local primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges and tertiary students.
Commencing with the year 2008, top students at each educational level who excel in their studies may be selected amongst the bursary award recipients to be further awarded Endeavour Award.
