Trap-Neuter-Release is a humane alternative for managing and reducing dog populations. TNR relies on sterilization of dogs to reduce breeding, leading to a gradual decline in numbers.

In 2016/17, about 217 dogs on Jurong Island and 170 dogs in various parts of Singapore were brought in under the TNR program. Many of these dogs were then re-homed by SOSD or other rescuers.

TNR is tedious and requires careful planning. Trapping these free-roaming dogs humanely and transporting them to a vet where they are sterilized requires patient effort over days or even weeks, and sometimes months.

Surgical sterilization stops the dogs' reproductive organs from functioning without affecting their other general behaviors and abilities. Only qualified veterinarian surgeons may perform this. It is generally a quick, safe, and painless procedure as the dog under general anesthesia, and recovers in a few days.

Dogs under the TNR program also receive health checks and vaccinations, and are treated for any diagnosed medical conditions. Sterilized dogs are physically marked to prevent them from undergoing the same procedure again. The dog is also micro-chipped for identification.
