Suicide is often preventable. For those at risk, talking about it is an important first step to recovery.

For World Suicide Prevention Day 2016, SOS put in motion a movement to get more people talking about the issue, and asking for the help they need. Unique SOS-designed plasters with the words #howru printed on it were created and distributed online and on the ground. Members of public were encouraged to play their part towards suicide prevention by acquiring a plaster and pledging their support.

For World Suicide Prevention Day 2017, it has evolved with the aim of educating people about suicide and encouraging the right conversations about the severe and complicated issue. People use these types of flippant phrases and hashtag such as 'The weather is so hot #iwannadie' all the time, both online and in everyday conversations. It is a way to dramatise a situation, but they never actually intend to take their own life. However, many do not realise that trivialising suicide can hurt the people around them who might be struggling with suicidal thoughts or even those left behind by it. We wanted to help build better understanding for those at risk of suicide.

About the Charity

In Singapore, 429 lives were lost to suicide in 2016: that's about 1-2 suicides everyday. For every suicide death, 10-15 others would have attempted it. Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) is the only suicide prevention centre in Singapore. We are a secular non-profit organisation which provides 24-hour confidential emotional support to people thinking about suicide, affected by suicide, or who have difficulty coping during a crisis. We take a holistic approach to suicide work with an emphasis on suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.
