Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.) -- a disease of the brain and spinal cord interferes with the body's ability to control essential functions such as walking, seeing and co-ordination. The symptoms, which vary from patient to patient can be managed with medication. However, medication to delay the progression of this disease comes at a high price -- from $2,000 to $ 3,500 a month, a cost that most sufferers cannot afford. M.S. is very rare in this part of the world and there are about 100 known cases in Singapore. Women are twice as likely to be inflicted than men, and it typically strikes those in 20 to 40 age group.

M.S. Assistance Fund is dedicated to provide financial support to patients with MS conditions who have difficulty paying for their medical treatments, screened by the medical social workers at their respective hospitals. The financial assistance is provided to patients under the care of neurologists at restructured hospitals who meet both clinical and funding criteria set up by the committee overseeing the Fund. The committee currently comprises representatives from these hospitals, who review clinical and funding criteria on an annual basis. The M.S. Assistance Fund is managed by NUHS Fund Limited, an IPC.

We hope to be able to create more awareness of the disease amongst the Singapore Community, and at the same time, fundraise for the M.S. Assistance Fund.

About the Charity

NUHS Fund Limited is a charity fund established to promote all medical and health-related services that are exclusively charitable and for the benefit of the Singapore community. A key objective is to address unmet gaps not covered by existing government and community assistance schemes and to assist patients who are determined to be in need of financial assistance with the costs of medical treatments, including the costs of the recovery process. NUHS Fund Limited relies on the support of benefactors and donors, and every dollar donated goes in its entirety to fund these unmet gaps faced by our beneficiaries and their families.
