Ms Irene Tam has been suffering from kidney disease since she was a teenager. In early 2021, she was told by her doctor that her condition had worsened and her kidneys were failing, and that she required dialysis to sustain her life. Between haemodialysis (HD) which requires travelling to the dialysis centre thrice a week, and peritoneal dialysis (PD)which can be done overnight at home, Irene chose the latter after she considered her lifestyle and work commitments. As a customer service professional, Irene decided to receive peritoneal dialysis treatment, a home-based treatment as it would not affect her full-time career and earning capacity. It also allows her to have more time to support her 86-year-old mother, who is bedridden.

With NKF's subsidies, the NKF PD Community Support Programme with regular home visits by the PD nurse, as well as the NKF PD Support Group, patients like Irene are well supported and can remain independent and empowered in their journey with peritoneal dialysis.

About the Charity

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is currently supporting more than 5,300 kidney failure patients, about two-thirds of the national kidney failure patient population. Our patients are of the lower income group. Treating a patient costs over $2,000 a month, however, the treatment our patients receive is highly subsidised, with 76% paying $50 or less a month out-of-pocket.

NKF remains committed to journeying with our patients every step of the way in their treatment and rehabilitative care, advocating kidney health to prevent kidney failure and making a difference in the renal landscape to benefit the community.
