One example is Mr Hamid who was admitted to MWS Nursing Home - Yew Tee in April 2020. His severe medical issues led to weakness in the lower limbs which in turn caused problems with coordination and balance. Mr Hamid needed heavy assistance in performing daily living activities. To address his mobility issues, the MWS Allied Health team designed a rehabilitative programme for the highly motivated Mr Hamid. He is now able to move about independently, take public transport on his own, and has successfully reintegrated back into the community. His quality of life and dignity greatly improved.
Another beneficiary whom we were able to make a lasting impact on is Mdm Chua Ah Moi. She lost her beloved husband to heart disease in March 2020, Mdm Chua struggled with depressive thoughts and loneliness. The COVID-19 restrictions intensified her sense of isolation. One day, she chanced upon an MWS volunteer who is a befriender to her neighbour. Curious, Mdm Chua asked if she could visit MWS Senior Activity Centre - [email protected] Place. Today, Mdm Chua is a familiar face at every game.
Whether it is in empowering people in need to regain their mobility and dignity, reintegrate into the community, discover new social ties or be financially independent, every dollar goes towards leaving a lasting impact in the lives of the nearly 8,800 beneficiaries whom we serve.
About the Charity
Founded 40 years ago in 1981 and registered as an Institution of a Public Character, Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) is a multi-service organisation that manages 20 centres and outreach programmes across Singapore.
We serve people in need regardless of their race and religion. Our critical services support low-income and/or distressed families, children from low-income families, at-risk youths, the destitute, sick and/or frail elderly, and the socially isolated.
We enable all to have life to the full by reducing poverty, alleviating the strains and stresses of modern life, helping the elderly to age in place and live with dignity, nurturing the potential of disadvantaged children and rehabilitating at-risk youths.
