Hello!! I just turned 20 and I wanted to use this opportunity to do a birthday fundraiser in light of the Covid-19 situation. The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone but especially the lower income groups in Singapore who are already restricted in terms of social mobility. Experts have said that the impact of the pandemic is likely to have more serious and far-reaching consequences on low-income families. A lot of people don't think poverty doesn't exist in Singapore but in truth it does, its just not visible to most of us!
Members of the low-income community have shared that household incomes are affected due to reduced work hours, reduced work days, being asked to take unpaid leave, pay cuts, and also retrenchment. The financial strain families are under is, understandably, causing emotional distress. Several respondents expressed feeling stressed and anxious, and concerned about paying for household expenses.
Disproportionately engaged in low-paid and precarious forms of work, they are part of the gig economy (e.g. Grab driver), are casual, contract, or part-time staff (e.g. F&B and cleaning), and are involved in seasonal work (e.g. baking/catering). Some daily rated workers need some assistance as their workplace has been temporarily closed. To help them tide over this period, Beyond Social Services is providing the necessary assistance to meet needs through the Family Assistance Fund. This is a fund specifically for the purpose of stabilising families.
About The Charity
Beyond serves disadvantaged young people and their families to move them beyond their problems. We want to develop young people who respect the law, value education and seek to become responsible persons.
Keeping young lives on track is about building a community where they can grow, contribute and believe that they are a part of. Beyond works to build inclusive communities where young people, local neighbourhoods, and wider society, can come together to share their gifts and cooperate on resolving their issues.
We value inter-organisational collaboration & will steadily expand by building networks of individuals and organisations that contribute towards our vision. We believe that our target group always benefits when more members of the community take an active interest in their well-being.
