Keming and Russell here. We both turn 23 this August and we like drinking Tiger beer at Maxwell Hawker Centre. We also like to complain about everything under the sun. So you can imagine how often we have complained to each another about having to watch our fingernails grow while staying indoors for the last year and a half.
But if we were both entirely honest with ourselves, it is a tremendous privilege to have nice, safe homes we can complain about being barricaded in. It is a tremendous privilege because homelessness persists in Singapore. Homelessness is the challenge upon which so many of life's other hurdles are raised: unemployment, social isolation, and poor physical/mental health, to name a few. We are all struggling in our own ways in this moment of COVID-19. But some of us don't have a choice but to struggle far harder for far longer, and with nothing to look forward to even when normalcy returns.
That is why we hope you will join us in contributing to New Hope Community Services, an organisation that helps the less fortunate amongst us get back on their feet by providing them with lodging and other services. And if you ever see us at Maxwell, let us pour you a cup - or buy you a kopi, up to you la.
About The Charity
New Hope Community Services is a social service agency and a member of the National Council of Social Services. Our goal goes beyond providing temporary shelter to the homeless in Singapore; we want to infuse them with real hope to see their lives changed.
Our work began in 2003 when four homeless men approached Pastor Andrew Khoo (our Founder & CEO) seeking refuge. Deeply moved by a need that had not been met by social services then, Ps Andrew set up the Shelter for Men-in-Crisis, Singapore's first shelter for homeless male ex-offenders. A year later, New Hope Community Services was born.
Since then, we have steadily expanded to meet the growing needs for temporary shelter in our community. We also recognise that building thriving and resilient families and individuals requires more than just a roof over their heads. As such, we run various services and programmes that help our clients break out of the poverty cycle and achieve long term financial resilience and independence.
OUR VISION - To be a Beacon of New Hope to the displaced & disadvantaged in the community
OUR MISSION - Restoring HOPE to those we serve
