Our Campaign Story

We are Project Coconut, a group of J1 students. We are here asking for your kindest help to 500 uncontactable seniors as these seniors cannot afford one :) We aim to fundraise $30,000 to buy simple phones (each cost $50 + $10 for prepared SIM card) for these elderly on behalf of the organisation Lions Befrienders.

These elderly people have an average age of 76. They are struggling financially, as the super majority of them are living in rental flats. 72% of them are single, and they are socially isolated. They also possess chronic illnesses. Therefore, they are arguably the most vulnerable group in the Covid-19 situation and even post Covid world according to the Ministry of Health.

In this connected era, mobile phones are probably the most useful tool for a person. Prolonged isolation would severely impact elderly's mental well-being and the only way to mitigate the sense of loneliness is through virtual communication such as phone calls. Being uncontactable and disconnected would cause huge inconvenience and emotional stress, uncertainty and fear, especially under this fluid yet dangerous Covid-19 period.

About The Charity

Established in 1995, LB has more than 25 years of experience in befriending and caring for seniors in order for them to age in place in the community. Over the years, LB strives to address the varied needs of more than 86,000 seniors by adopting a senior-centric approach in its eldercare services. Leveraging on the support of some 1,000 regular volunteers, we actively engage more than 6,000 at-risk seniors via a spectrum of integrated eldercare service from preventive to intervention through comprehensive programmes, including social, emotional, mental and physical, to improve their quality of life.

Amid the challenges in the eldercare landscape, LB undertakes constant review and adjustment to its programmes and services. Under our Community Outreach arm, we currently operate 10 Active Ageing Centres, 3 Cluster Support, 2 Senior Group Homes and Home Personal Care services. Our Befriending arm extends island-wide befriending services to socially isolated seniors. For its exemplary disclosure and corporate governance practices, LB was conferred the Charity Transparency Award by the Charity Council in 2016 and 2017.
