We are a group of ex-platoonmates in OCS. We found the cause of SPD to be very meaningful and decided to help raise funds for the less fortunate in our community whilst at the same time trying to keep fit.
Covid has hit our community hard and we are looking to help give back in whatever way that we can.
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected everyone's lives, albeit in varying degrees. For many persons with disabilities (PWDs) who already face challenges in their daily lives, the impact of the pandemic has made it even more difficult for them and their caregivers.
Many families who have a member with disabilities are seeking support from SPD social workers for financial assistance, higher subsidies or waiver of fees for services receive from SPD. PWDs at the SPD Sheltered Workshop doing simple packing and assembling tasks now have less to do as job contracts have reduced significantly over this period. Caregivers who had to put in extended hours of caregiving during the circuit breaker are thankful that their child who need special care, can now continue to go to SPD's Day Activity Centre daily while they get the much-needed respite, and for some, they can continue to work without worrying. These are just some examples of the added challenges caused by COVID-19 on PWDs and their caregivers.
More than ever, SPD needs the support of the community. To give you an idea how far your contribution goes, every $20 you give will provide lunch for a week for one person with disabilities receiving day care.
We are grateful for any donation you make and hope you can help us share this appeal with your family and friends too. Lastly, sign up for SPD Ability Walk & Run 2021. Walk, run, and give generously to support persons with disabilities in our communities.
About The Charity
SPD is a local charity set up in 1964 to help people with disabilities maximise their potential and be a part of mainstream society.
We are here to help children and youths with special needs reach for the stars and be the best that they can be through early intervention and educational support.
We strive to boost the self-reliance and mobility of persons with disabilities within the community, and we do so through therapy services, assistive technology and the support and encouragement of our care team.
Our day care programmes provide respite to families, making it possible for persons with disabilities to stay with their loved ones at home for as long as possible without having to resort to institutional care.
A strong advocate for inclusive employment, we train people with disabilities and work with them to seek suitable employment opportunities so that they can be financially independent and lead a full and engaged life.
After more than 50 years, we remain focused and committed to enabling people with disabilities.
