Grief is love with no place to go. Instead of bottling up all that love, I decided to gift what would be Ah Gong's 82nd birthday and hope that it will make a difference to the lives of the beneficiaries.
We were blessed to receive the unconditional care and support from the HCA team when Ah Gong was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2018. The professional medical team made regular house visits to check on Ah Gong and very patiently guided us along the way. They made it possible for him to spend his journey with the family from the comfort of our home.
With great care from the team, we were lucky to spend ten precious months with Ah Gong. It was difficult accepting the prognosis at first, I had insisted on consulting surgeons after surgeons, exploring the possibility of putting my 80 year-old Ah Gong through surgery and trying out immunotherapy.
It was only after exhausting every possible treatment that we realized we had to make the days count and not count the days. I am always thankful that we made good of the time and had photoshoots, went on overseas trips and celebrated his 80th birthday before he left us. Ah Gong's last words were that he's at peace and doesn't want anything else, just to see all of us one last time. It taught us that it's not the quantity but quality of life that matters.
During this difficult period, when donations have been declining, I hope that we can all contribute to help others live and leave well.
Each birthday is a milestone, some more important. With the new normal restrictions on gatherings, having an actual birthday party or celebration may be challenging.
How about dedicating your birthday celebration as something special and meaningful?
