Our Campaign Story

ends 28 Jun 2021, 11:59 PM

'All Indians know at least one other person who has COVID-19,' Abhishek said, sipping on his tea. 'It's not an exaggeration - at least not for me. My grandmother got it last week.' This prompted a flurry of compassionate wishes which were accepted, but left us feeling uncomfortably helpless. We wanted to help, but how seemed a mystery.

Here is where the Red Cross steps in. The Singapore Red Cross is fundraising to deliver assistance and support to communities in India, affected or at risk of being affected by the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

With a population of over 1.3 billion, India has recorded over 17 million infections and almost 200,000 deaths. Medical expenses, equipment, and supplies are urgently needed - to date, the Red Cross has been able to deliver five ventilators to community hospitals in New Delhi through the Indian Red Cross Society. With over 300,000 new infections daily, the ventilators have saved a large number of lives and families.

'The needs are immense,' notes the SRC Secretary General, 'and we look forward to working with more organisations to support the relief efforts in India.'

To continue delivering the aforementioned medical care and supplies, funds are urgently needed; the more we raise, the more we can provide lifesaving resources to those in crisis. We ask for your assistance in maximising this effort to reach Indian communities who need help.

Updates as of 12 May 2021: Since the launch of its public appeal on 28 April, the Singapore Red Cross has received over S$3.2 million in donations.

The first tranche of aid, worth about SGD 3.6 million, includes medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders, and ventilators to directly support patients and healthcare workers in hospitals.

Medical equipment and supplies, such as ventilators, oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators, are urgently needed. In the first instance, we have purchased and will deliver five ventilators to community hospitals in New Delhi through the Indian Red Cross Society. As we raise more funds, we can provide more lifesaving medical resources.

'The needs are immense, and we look forward to working with more organisations to support the relief efforts in India. Our response plan will be adjusted based on ongoing developments, evolving needs and regular assessment of the situation,' said Mr Benjamin William.
