Not matter how big or small, every contribution to make the little children to walk, counts tremendously.
Blessed you, Louise, Yan
Awlia has Spina Bifida, a condition that causes severe structural scoliosis on her spine and weak muscles around her trunk and limbs. This has affected her daily living such as walking, and she requires assistance in areas like wearing shoes.
She attends the SPD Early Intervention Programme for Infants and Children (EIPIC) where physiotherapist, Chandra, performs stretching exercises on her spinal muscle to keep her spine flexible and to delay the spinal curve progression.
Chandra also works with Awlia on her walking skills using different aids like the Kaye walker and hula hoop, where she has progressed from crawling, standing, walking with the help of walking aids, to now, walking independently.
'We are truly blessed with a dedicated team of professional staff at [email protected] who showed us so much determination and motivation and believe in Awlia.' - Mdm Baizura, Awlia's mother.
With no experience in caring for a child with special needs, it was very challenging for Mdm Baizura and family. To ease their stress, Chandra works closely with them to support Awlia's functional needs at home. SPD's Social Worker also applied for subsidies to lighten their financial burden.
Please donate generously to help many others like Awlia to take their first step to become more self-reliant and independent. Your donation will go towards SPD's early intervention programmes that provide therapy and educational support to close to 700 children with varying special needs.
About The Charity
SPD is a local charity set up in 1964 to help people with disabilities maximise their potential and be a part of mainstream society.
We are here to help children and youths with special needs reach for the stars and be the best that they can be through early intervention and educational support.
We strive to boost the self-reliance and mobility of persons with disabilities within the community, and we do so through therapy services, assistive technology and the support and encouragement of our care team.
Our day care programmes provide respite to families, making it possible for persons with disabilities to stay with their loved ones at home for as long as possible without having to resort to institutional care.
A strong advocate for inclusive employment, we train people with disabilities and work with them to seek suitable employment opportunities so that they can be financially independent and lead a full and engaged life.
After more than 50 years, we remain focused and committed to enabling people with disabilities.
